The book mentioned is "The Media Lab", by Stewart Brand (of Whole Earth Catalog 
fame), ISBN 0-670-81442-3. The book has a chapter on Kay's Vivarium project,
which is being worked on at MIT and in Los Angeles.

This book is an *very* interesting look at some future technology -- read it!
