Is your class on board? The New York State Board of Regents has mandated that technology be introduced into the classroom. Your school most likely has computers available to help fulfill this mandate. But what do you do with them? How much computing can you do just for computing's sake? The Newsday in Education on-line classroom project gives your computer a purpose. Newsday can turn your computer from a rusty box of bits and bytes into a window on the world. Your classroom computer CAN be fun and exciting-- it can link your class with unlimited information and ideas. Newsday can help broaden your computing horizons. Here's how the project works: Participating classes receive copies of Newsday every Tuesday for a ten-week period. That ten-week period can be anytime between October 4 and December 13, 1988. By noon each Tuesday, you'll find an on-line essay topic and multiple choice quiz based on the contents of Tuesday's paper. Students will be able to read the newspaper and-- through the Newsday BBS-- respond electronically to what they've read. Students' essays will be displayed in a special conference area where they can be read and responded to by other students who link-up from their schools. Quiz answers will be posted in an area accessible by participating teachers. In addition to these specialized educational resources, participating classes will have access to the entire range of Newsday BBS features. From news to entertainment, sports to business-- Newsday puts electronic information at your fingertips. Our Campaign '88 files can keep your class in touch with the candidates and their positions. Our Summer Olympics files can brief your class on the athletic endeavors at Seoul. Students can join in any number of active conversations between callers. There is no charge for the use of the Newsday BBS. Participating classes are asked to purchase a minimum of 150 copies of Newsday over the ten-week period. At the special student rate for Newsday, that comes to $30 over the entire ten-week period. And, in New York State, newspapers can be paid for with textbook funds. To enroll your class, enter <A> at the "Contents Page" menu. At the "Questionaire" menu, choose the NIEJOIN questionaire. Fill it out fully, and we'll contact you to finalize your participation. If you want additional information first, enter <C> at the "Contents Page" menu and leave a comment for the sysop. =========================================================================== == A Newsday BBS Download == ==-----------------------------------------------------------------------== == Call the Newsday BBS -- (516) 454-6959 == ==-----------------------------------------------------------------------== == Copyright (c) 1988 Newsday, Inc.
