[comp.society.futures] socaial effects of nets

js9b+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Jon C. Slenk") (03/16/89)

Hello all;
	I just wanted to make some comments regarding the nets...

	1) Have any of you read Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card? He has interesting analysis of nets. They are areas of discussion and news where one can make a name for oneself very easily by being a rational and persuasive author. The nets in the book seem
to be more concentrated, ie not so many different bboards etc. and they also seem to have areas which are more concerned with policy/philosophy rather than hobbies i.e: ext.nn.philosophy.government etc....

	2) HyperText is what is needed, definitly. Today, there is TOO MUCH INFORMATION and not enough correlation and sorting. We have the technology, both soft and hardware wise to create proper HyperText systems which could then be accessed (for an annual
fee perhaps) by anyone who had the hook-up (modem or whatever). It is my belief that such a venture is becoming more and more necessary as people find that there is more and more to know and learn. If a HyperText system existed, we could all be the
experts, merely by searching for the information desired. Today, there are more and more ways to ignore information (TV etc) by having it spoon fed or ijust passed up. Information and knowledge are what we need to keep us going; by us I mean the US if
not the world, and by going I mean advancing and making proper, informed decisions based on solid documented knowledge. We will be able to concentrate on researching and gathering new information, rather than spending as much time as we do on checking
over past materials.

	I look forward to the day when I can look up, with my computer, as fast as may be, anything I need to. Past newspapers, articles, TV broadcasts, plays, politician's policies and performances, etc. etc.

Sincerely,

Jon Slenk / js9b CMU.
