As long as we're into predictions, let me suggest a poll or simulation in which I present a specific problem, all of you respond, and I collate and post the results (following which discussion will ensue). PROBLEM: You have a reasonable sum of money (say $1,000,000 per year) to invest in microelectronics and computer technology research and development over the 5 year period 1990-1995. At the end of the 5 years you want to either (1) have a technology application (or applications) in hand, or (2) have solved a fundamental problem enabling short-term construction of such application(s). This technology must have broad applicability to individual, business, or government needs (and therefore be eminently marketable). Describe briefly the R&D program you would recommend. Cut-off date for replies will be Friday, January 12. Results will be posted the following Monday, January 15. Contentious discussion to follow.
