[comp.society.futures] ugh ugh ugh

bzs@world.std.com (Barry Shein) (08/10/90)

There is a gnu.discuss list for this kind of soapboxing about whether
or not you like FSF's views. And all of it has been hashed over on
that and a dozen other lists thousands of time with little more light
shed on the subject other than you're free to do what you want and
they're free to do what they want.

It really has nothing to do with info-futures (except that vague
assertion that we all have to do something in the future and this
might be one of those things...)

I also am getting the sinking feeling we are a half-dozen messages
away from the old property rights etc soap-boxing that will doubtless
generate 100 messages which won't be read by anyone on this list
except the flamers.

Save your breath, as I've said before, no one here is reading your
missives.

The semanto-sociology is really kind of amazing:

  1. A question about computer crime comes up.

  2. The word hacker/cracker is used. It's asserted that hacker means
someone like Stallman (i.e. no relation to computer crime.)

  3. Upon seeing the word "stallman" a tirade starts over FSF's
     copyleft.

  4. This quickly devolves to an all-out flame-fest over property rights
     ideologies and various economic theories.

Uh, maybe we can restrain ourselves from this silliness and draw back
to the original issue? Or, heavens, even think of something original
and interesting to say?

Thanks.
