[rec.boats] seagulls

czwicky@umn-d-ub.D.UMN.EDU (craig zwicky) (04/04/89)

I know someone who runs a resort who is having problems with seagulls.
Now, I am not sure if this is the appropriate list for this letter, but
here goes:

How can one keep seagulls away from the resort property. They are
doing an excellent job of fouling up the swimming raft and the boats.
This doesn't sit too well with the owner. There is a general solution
in this neck of the woods (northern Minnesota) to such a problem. It
is demonstrated quite nicely by when I went to a local store and asked
for a live squirrel trap, the response was, "We don't have squirrel traps,
we will sell you some .22 shells". So, how can I get rid of the gulls
effectively so as to avert them getting shot?

Please send responses to me personally as I don't read the list very
much.

   thanks,

Your friend may want to try using a plastic or styrofoam owl
perched on top of some buildings. Plastic snakes also work and
can be placed on the roof so only the birds will see them. :)
I think you can get these at marin supply stores. I know
hunters use the owls for deking crows, so you could find the
crows at sporting goods stores.

Seagulls come around for food. See to it that NO food is
available (lying around as trash or being actually fed by the
guests) and the seagulls will eventually leave. You can scare
them away by shooting bottle rockets...that's what the fisherman in
the Florida Keys do. By the way, it's against the law to shoot a
sea bird in Florida. I wouldn't be surprised if it's against the
law there, too.

If there is food available, nothing will really get rid of them.
What should they leave if they have found a reliable food source?
It's worth a few scares to eat potato chips!
