[rec.boats] Wanted--spec's for NMEA 0180/0183

jim@ghp.UUCP (Jim Stewart) (07/18/90)

I am looking for the protocol spec's for the interface
between Loran (a position locator device) and the autopilot
for a boat. The interface is also used between other boat
electronic devices as well. The name of the interface is
NMEA 0180. Their is another spec that I am also interested
in, but it is less of a priority, called NMEA 0183.

Any help is appreciated. So far I believe it is 1200 baud,
with TTL levels, and short messages of some sort.

I hate asking this, but could anyone with a response mail it
please. We don't have incoming on one of these news groups
and I am going away next week and might lose the response.
Thanks for your patience.

[The following email sent to original poster.]

Jim,
The latest issue of Practical Sailor has a discussion of these
interface "standards" -- in quotes, because many manufacturers
say they are compatible with the "standard", but in fact are
unable to communicate with other manufacturers who say the same.
Apparently, the standards are too loosely written, and compliance
too loosely monitored.

Nevertheless, I would be interested in the results of your query.
How about posting them?
