[alt.cyberpunk] Max Headroom

stadler@apple.UUCP (10/19/87)

Hey folks,

Friday night I watched the last ABC episode of Max Headroom. It was fun,
as usual. They even had a little plug at the end that was pretty funny
(in the we have not yet begun to fight vein). I wonder who's got the
episodes they didn't get around to showing....

But my question for this group has been bubbling for a while and is only
now coming to a head.... Where does this collection of cyber thinkers place
Max & co. in the cyberpunk world?

I would offer evidence that his makers were up on it. In a recent episode,
the boy genius character was hacking his way through a network and the letters
ICE clearly showed on the bottom of the monitor.

( Gotta go. Have to catch the next jump for Chiba. I'm due for a new Hitachi
neuro-socket. My deck is just too fast for my old Toshiba. )

Big Bummer. And I, being the busy student that I am missed almost all of
the episodes anyway. Anybody have any pointers on how to get them
on VHS ? (other than recording them, my VCR doesn't have programmable
past recording capability).

I suppose it is only such TV Legends as Star Trek that make it video tape.

   Speaking of Star Trek...

Trek was saved for second and third seasons by *letter-writing campaigns*
by the fans. NASA named the first (unoperational, sadly) space shuttle
ENTERPRISE, due to the incredible number of letters received from fans.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture was brought about by letters to Paramount
from fans. Not to mention all subsequent films that were brought about
by the response to the first. Not to mention the new TV series. Etc. etc.

   THE POINT IS:

We don't have to take this lying down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WRITE to the address that was posted a few articles back. (It's not that
many, just hit 'P' a few times...that's it. Good.)

Write to them, on legal-sized paper, with the address on the envelope,
and NOTHING ELSE. DO NOT WRITE "Max Headroom" on the envelope or the
letter will be sent to the fan mail department and the appropriate
people will not see it. BE POLITE. Be *unfailingly* polite.

Mention the fact that the show will do better in another timeslot. It's
a known fact that Friday nights are bad for their kind of audience. Star
Trek was killed off back in '69 by NBC broadcasting it Friday nights at
10 pm. And we all know how much of a mistake that was...

DO NOT use bad language. Do not be insulting. BE POLITE. (I can't stress
this enough.) If you're not, they'll simply throw away the letter without
reading it, and that does no good at all.

   And lastly...

GET *ALL* OF YOUR FRIENDS WHO WATCH THE SHOW TO DO THE SAME!!!!!

   Thank you.

We can bring the show back.

To ereryone else enfuriorated by the thought of MAX
HEADROOM getting back on the air because a few demented,
perverted, immature individuals choose to flood ABC with
mail demanding the show back on, fufilling their own selfish
needs at the expense of the sane American audience which has
decreed that MAX HEADROOM SUCKS:

What's good for the goose is good for the gander! Immediately
take out a pen and write to ABC. Thank them for booting MAX the
heck out and request that he always stay owt! Request that ABC
actually buy all rights to MH and BURN each and every copy of ALL
episodes. WRITE TO THEM NOW!!!

DON'T LET MAX BACK!!!!!!

Either you left out the "(-:" symbol or you are one of those
intolerants who refuse to admit that people have the right to
enjoy something that you don't.

Can we say "Freedom of choice"??? I didn't think so. You of course, are
entitled to your opinion. I would never dream of forcing you to watch somethingyou found offensive. Nor would I exhibit the poor upbringing to resort to
throwing a tantrum and calling people names simply because they had the
unbelievable nerve to like something I don't. If Max makes it back on the air,
it will be because enough people requested it, not because of a "few demented,
perverted, immature individuals flood ABC" with demands.

By the way, did you sit up long trying to figure out a way to offend as many
people on the net as possible???

work for yourself.

I don't object to your voicing your opinions about Max, what I DO object to
is being judged by someone that has never met me.....I am neither immature
or perverted but then again I'm sure that maturity is a word you would have
to look up in the dictionary.

I'm sorry I've stooped to sarcasm, but I
dislike being attacked for no reason at all.

I am not interested in participating in a extended flame war over this, I
simply had to defend my right to freedom of choice.

Since I saw no smileys in this posting, I shall assume that this person
really is an ass.

Yup, that's me, demented, perverted and immature.

>mail demanding the show back on, fufilling their own selfish

Please tell me how this is at the expense of the American audience. Is it
because the American audience wants ALL programming on ALL channels at
ALL times to be the SAME brainless SHIT? Who is being selfish here, me
for wanting SOME of my kind of entertainment, or you for wanting ALL
entertainment to be your kind PERIOD.

>decreed that MAX HEADROOM SUCKS:

Are you claiming that ratings are and accurate indication of the American
publics taste? If so, then I feel sorry for you and the rest of the
ignorant slobs.

Is this censorship, or just good ole moral BOOK BURNING?!?!?
(We can't let our innocents be exposed to this SIN!)

>DON'T LET MAX BACK!!!!!!

Why do you wish to deprive me of entertainment just becuase you don't care
for it? I don't do that to you.

>Disclaimer: These attitudes DO reflect the opinion of my employer.

Oh, you work for the Moral Majority?

BTW, I hadn't planned on writing to ABC, but this convinced me to.

Are all you people so out of touch you can't recognize heavy sarcasm
without a :-) ? Makes me wonder...

Rather than flaming and counter-flaming about Max being canceled, why
not talk about things which were the original intent of the group?
Only one person had anything constructive to say about it (how to
conduct a letter writing campaign).

Gibson's world is far from eutopia, but as far as overpopulated,
polluted, post-nuclear scenarios are concerned, it's pretty rosy. My
major problem with his world is that except perhaps for the neural
technology, I think it will happen a lot sooner than he places it. My
"conservative" guess for most of the stuff is 2010-2020. Think what
life was like back in 1957 for comparison, and then remember to
account for the exponential growth in human knowledge and technology.
Wonder what Gibson will write when he finds out about nanotech?

Hey, I just read an article in the paper (Gad! How barbaric!) that says there isgoing to be a Max Headroom movie.
It is tentatively titled "Max Headroom for President," and the big-wigs in
want it to be released to coincided with the presidential election.
So far there is no script, but "the plan is to use a few of the people who were
on the series."
