It's a tough call... The difficulty is in pinning down a specific style or group. Obviously, Tangerine Dream is a good choice, and equally obvious is the fact than any cyber cowboy worth the moniker listens only to digital recordings on CD. With this in mind, I would recommend some of the recordings on the DMP label, specifically Flim and The BB's or Billy Barber as upbeat digital jazz. Mannheim Steamroller - their disc of Christmas music is beautifully incongrouous. Finally, almost anything on Windham Hill CD, from the solo piano of George Winston with a hypnotic and otherworldly quality to the haunting guitar of William Ackerman (*Conferring With the Moon*) to the irreplaceable ShadowFax group, will suit. My current favorite on WH CD is a compilation soundtrack album from a Japanese film called "The Story of Naomi Akemura", a Japanese mountain climber who disappeared in the Alps in 1985. The album is called "The Shape of The Land" and has a Zen-like intensity and concentration that makes it equally good for late nights of studying and (I presume) a deadly network game of hack-and-mouse. It's interesting to think about what the music of the new age will be/is like... any budding electronic musicians out there? gleep michael rose mr2t@andrew.cmu.edu
