I remember watching a docomentary, many years ago in the UK in
which the subject matter discussed was very similar.
They were exploring the ability that some animals have for sensing
direction. The producers claimed that a human being could also tell
what direction he/she was facing due to the existence if a built in
body magnet. This magnet is deposit of either iron or iron
containing salts that are located on the inner scalp lining, just
between the eyes and is recharged with sleep.  While sleeping the
body is facing one way for a prolonged length of time and the earths
feild slowly but surely aligns the deposits.

Thats all I can remember of the show for now.
