I can't verify this (I haven't yet used xenix or a pc/at), but I got sent
the fix below. I haven't seen it posted , so here it is :

Here are some patches for /usr/lib/uucp/uucico that will allow you
to increase the dialer timeout period:
adb -w /usr/lib/uucp/uucico
$x ( put in hex mode)
3f:2bae?x ( should give you the value 1eb8 )
(Change the value '1e' (30 decimal) to whatever timeout period
you wish. )
3f:2bae?w 0x80b8 (this would you give you a 0x80 = 128
second timeout period)

It fixed all the problems with uucp timeout.
