[net.micro] FinalWord/Mince/PerfectWriter/Emacs

General information about some Emacs-like editors:

As several people already mentioned, Final Word does work under CP/M-80 and
does not requiere a Z80. The initial versions didn't allow you to customize
the function to command bindings. The editor also has a different command
structure from EMACS and makes use of multiple menus. In subsequent versions
Mark of the Unicorn added the capability of customizing the editor.

Final Word (version 1.15) includes about 120 entries in an 'action' list,
a set of functions available for key bindings. With the addition to the list
of 'delete forward line' and 'prefix two' it is possible to create
bindings similar to a subset of EMACS (which make Final Word similar
to Perfect Writer and Mince).

Even after you change all the bindings you can use the menu system (there
is really no need for it). The only problem is the manual now refers
to inexistent commands and might confuse a beginner not familiar with EMACS.

I have customized FWord, Perfect Writer (v 1.2) and EMACS (in a DEC-20)
so all behave similarly when working with Televideo 950's (as terminals or
working with Compupro systems running: a)MPM-816 or CP/M-80 with the
8085/8088 and b) MPM-816 and a Macrotech MI-286 (Z80H and 80286).

I have also tried FinalWord in an IBM PC-XT under MS-DOS (v 2.xx)
and customized it to look like the MPM and CP/M versions.

According to a message left in the CPRO
bulletin board, FW (version 1.16) works fine with the new PC graphics
board from Vyasin( CompuPro) running under Concurrent DOS and the PC shell.

For people looking for an EMACS like editor, *plus* a SCRIBE-like formatter
Final Word might be a very good choice.

In the case of EMACS-like stand alone editors running under MS-DOS or PC-DOS
v 2.xx, I would try EPSILON.
