[comp.ai.neural-nets] Beginner Books Summarized/Thanks Russell Beale

bruce@menkar.gsfc.nasa.gov (Bruce Mount 572-8408) (03/15/90)

This is a summary of suggestions I received...
> ...for a beginning book on neural nets.
>Something like "Neural nets for idiots" or "Neural nets made so simple
>even YOU can understand it".

I have no connection with any of the authors named below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
[From Russell Beale who warned me fair and square it was a shameless plug.]

I have just co-written a book:

    "An Intro. to Neural Networks"

aimed at complete beginners to the area. It'll be published in
June by Adam Hilger, c. 250 pages, ISBN 0 85274 262 2
-- Russell Beale, Advanced Computer Architecture Group,
-- Dept. of Computer Science, University of York, Heslington,

[Russell also included a very detailed and interesting table of
 contents for his book which I would be happy to forward to anyone]
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone will recommend the PDP books to you so I'll go for:

@book{Kohonen88,
        author =        "Teuvo Kohonen",
        address =       "New York",
        year =          1988,
        publisher =     "Springer-Verlag",
        title = "Self-Organization and Associative Memory",
        edition =       "second"}
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Parallel Distributed Processing Vol. 1 "
   by RUmelhart and McCleland, MIT Press

"Neural Computing"
   by Wasserman, A Van Nostrand Reinhold Book.

WARNING BRIEF PERSONAL NOTE:
Although I tried to mail back a personal thanks to eash person that
offered a suggestion, I was unable to get mail to Russell Beale.

Russell,

Wow! Thanks a lot! The table of contents for your upcoming book looks
great. You can count on selling at least one copy of your book. I hope
your book does well.

Best of luck,

--Bruce
(If anyone else did not get a thank you from me, I'm sorry. Thank you!
