We are considering selling our CONVEX Mini-Supercomputer. The machine is rated at 30 MFlops, and, using our back propagation simulator (which would be included with the machine), we get an effective 13 MFlops. The machine runs BSD 4.3 Unix and can comfortably run several large number-crunching jobs at once. The cost of this machine new approaches three quarters of a million dollars. We will sell it for substantially less than that, probably between $150K and $200K. For tasks like back propagation, you'd be getting 20% of the speed of a Connection Machine at less than 10% of the price (and you'd also be getting a machine that's far far easier to program).
