A one-paragraph news blurb from _Aviation Week and Space Technology_, 16 July 1990, p13: "The Advanced Tactical Fighter will use neural networks for fusion of some data at speeds 4 to 6 orders of magnitude faster than was possible in the past, a Lockheed engineer said. For example, such high data rate will permit fusion of infrared, radar and intercepted electronic information from the aircraft's own sensors as well as that relayed from ground stations or other cooperating aircraft. The resulting unified cockpit display will give the pilot a much improved awareness of activity around the aircraft." Lockheed is competing against Northrop to build the Advanced Tactical Fighter. The item doesn't mention whether neural networks are used in Lockheed's design only, or in both designs. Jay Scott scott@cs.uiuc.edu
