I am not interested in APPLES, PCs, CPM and a whole bunch of other specialty sub-groups, but by subscribing to just net.micro I seem to have to wade through the junk from the subgroups anyway! Must people always send a copy to net.micro when posting to a specialty subgroup -- can they not think first if it is of "general" micro interest or not covered by a subgroup??? And if cross-posting a LARGE article (gt. one screenfull) does seem necessary, couldnt a "pointer" note to the large article in the specialty group be just submitted to the more general net.micro? A small sampling from the last 2 or 3 days... Take my case, I've found out about GEM running on the Sanyo mbc 555. Who should I post to? 1. Since the sanyo is ibm compatible net.micro.pc 2. Since first system with GEM is the Atari 5?? ST, net.micro.atari 3. Since the Sanyo has no true section, net.micro I didn't send it to net.micro.atari as no sanyo user would try to find out info on their machines in there. When, I got my micro, I looked only at net.micro and net.micro.pc for relevant material. Hence the two posting. Having a pointer was useless in my case as my posting was about 20 lines In fact, this followup article of what someone else has written is a lot longer than my article. If you still won't forgive me, then blame it on itchy fingers. OK??? ..{allegra cornell decvax ihnp4 linus utzoo}!utcsri!utai!indra

Most of the postings ARE specific to a machine and of no intrest to those of different or no loyalty. Those who do read the specific bboards have to read the same artical 2 or 3 times (hint to net.unix, net.unix-wizards)! Dave Hollander PS Why do you think there are no scopes on a shotgun?

[When will a version of UNIX(tm) be available for a cassette-driven Timex 1000?] > I am not interested in APPLES, PCs, CPM and a whole bunch of > other specialty sub-groups, but by subscribing to just net.micro > I seem to have to wade through the junk from the subgroups anyway! > Must people always send a copy to net.micro when posting to a > specialty subgroup -- can they not think first if it is of > "general" micro interest or not covered by a subgroup??? > ... > - Ken Dykes > Software Development Group, U. of Waterloo > Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. N2L 3G1 > {clyde, utzoo}!watmath!watbun!kgdykes Or, the other side of the coin-- When I post a general-interest SHORT(< 1 screen) article to net.micro, why do I get a bunch of flames telling me to go elsewhere? I own a TI-99/4A and I have had occasion to post articles requesting info on such topics as-- 0. Connecting a composite video monitor to a particular video-display IC(TMS9918 in this case). There are other computers that use this chip, I'm sure. 1. Questions on programming techniques(generating position independent code). 2. Handling a printer from a computer through a parallel output port(Intel 8255) and what happens when its internal buffer fills up(the manual didn't say anything about this). How many people can identify with this question? It really does burn me when people post Mac and PC articles in net.micro and I get told to "get a REAL computer" or "go elsewhere with this drivel about toys". Of course some of the responses have been quite humorous and therefore enjoyable to read, and some have been extremely helpful, but the elitism I sometimes get really does bother me. Another problem (unsolvable) with net.micro is that INFO-MICRO from arpa is gateway'd onto net.micro. INFO-MICRO is a more general newsgroup, and so some articles that might go to usenet subgroups are actually arpa-based, where there is more restricted choice of subgroups. -- Kurt Guntheroth John Fluke Mfg.
