I recently purchased Polaris Printmerge in an attempt to get more out of my LaserJet printer. The program is written for PCDOS on IBM 'compatibles' and I am running a Compupro with PCPRO (Essentially MSDOS). I bought it anyway because I was desperate for such a program. The program replaces Mail-Merge and does microjustification and font selection. It also allows one to draw lines and boxes and to merge charts created by Microsoft's CHART program. Needless to say the program used interrupts below 20H for screen, keyboard, and printer I/O. No good for MSDOS. But, my desperation led me to delve more deeply than I cared to into the program. So far I have succeeded in modifying it to work with MSDOS as a print filter with no screen or keyboard interaction. This doesn't let me do everything that the program is capable of, but is satisfactory for my purposes. If anyone is interested I will mail them details (very simple changes). What I would really like, however, is for everyone to call Polaris (619) 471-0922 and ask for an MSDOS version of their wonderful program. Then I won't be cursing IBM for imposing their standards on the world. (My computer is called HAL, by the way.) Jim Potter jp@lanl.arpa
