I am a Forensic Scientist who became interested in NNs as an approach to
understanding decision making in Forensic Science. Most activities in the
Forensic Sciences involve complex pattern matching problems and NNs seem
ideally suited for use in some areas. I am preparing a presentation for a
conference which will outline potential Forensic applications of NNs and
these include: fingerprint comparison, handwriting comparison, blood
pattern analysis and complex statistical analyses such as elemental analysis
of glass. It would also be nice to address the problem of patterns that
result from DNA analysis (fingerprinting). I feel this last application may
involve modelling of the dynamics of genetic information in entire gene
pools by using cellular automata (artificial life) but which may be in a
form that closely resemble NNs. This last approach would be aimed at
modelling the dynamics of the gene pool with the goal of setting bounds on
the information contained in genetic material by establishing its
complexity.
I would appreciate corresponding with you if you have done some work
in these areas of potential applications, if you have some suggestions or if
you simply wish to see if I can help you with some ideas for applications in
Forensic Sciences for your work. Thanks.
