(a) Does anyone know of research directed at associating statistical or heuristic confidence measures with classifications made by neural nets? (b) Anyone know how specific commercial products address this question (if at all)? Mostly I'm talking about feedforward nets that were trained with supervised methods. A partial answer to (b) is: HNC's KnowledgeNet product literature says they provide two "confidence measures." "Decisiveness measures the strength of the network's decision, as evidenced by the distance between the output state(s) and decision boundaries." Decisiveness values range from 0% to 100%. HNC's other "confidence" measure is "certainty", which has to do with whether/how much currently unknown input values could affect the result if they became known. If at least a few people tell me they're interested, I'll summarize to the newsgroup.
