References: This article marks the birth of comp.unix.ultrix. Many of you will recognize this as a mutation of the info-ultrix mailing list which I started in July after the Ultrix BOF in Phoenix. I must admit that I was surprised at the number of Ultrix systems "out there." Info-ultrix quickly blossomed to over 200 addresses and I was just as quickly buried trying to keep the mailing list up to date. This newsgroup is moderated (for better or for worse, discussions on this matter should be taken elsewhere) and, as you may have guessed by now, I am the moderator. My qualifications for the job include being the system administrator for a VAX 8700 running Ultrix v2.0. I have also administered various Unix systems from v6 through 4.[123] BSD. I am certainly not a DEC & Ultrix unquestioning fan. As a matter of fact, my feelings about Ultrix would probably make me well received in DEC's Ultrix testing group. If this newsgroup is like most of the others I read then I am fairly confident that we should have some pretty candid discussions, not of the merits of Ultrix, but rather of its problems and work-arounds and some of its unique features (e. g., DECnet/Ultrix and LAT code). My moderation policy is simple. 1) Anything is fine if it relates to Ultrix. 2) I don't like obscenity or flames. Rule 2 overrides rule 1. I am not your mother and I will not try to teach you how to write, but there are enough words in our language that swearing is rarely the most effective way to express yourself. Please remember as you write that you are addressing other people, with feelings just like yours. If you are running recent news software then you should be able to post articles normally and they will be mailed to me for affixing of the good housekeeping seal of approval (TM, I'm sure). If you have older news software, or you just like using mail instead of news to submit articles, please send submissions to felix!info-ultrix.
