Reply-Path: i finally got an answer to my nfs-related cc/ld/ar problems. ultrix support told me that there is a bug in /etc/biod that causes it to fail on large write operations, typically those performed by the compiler and linker. these failed writes, therefore, were causing object file corruption. the "fix" is to stop running biod and to force the writing process to block on the write rather than having biod block while the process remains run-able. i have made this fix to all of our ultrix systems and most of our problems have vanished (the code doesn't work, but at least it compiles!) it turns out that a letter explaining this problem was sent to all "warranty customers" of ultrix 2.0, but for some reason we never got it. i'm not quite sure what they mean by warranty customers -- if you have support but are out of the warranty period, are you hosed? if anyone has a copy of this letter, i'd like to see the full facts & details.... --hal stern polygen corporation 200 fifth avenue waltham, ma 02254 (617) 890-2888 {bu-cs, princeton}!polygen!stern
