[comp.unix.ultrix] hayes modems and Ultrix 2.0

zemon@felix.UUCP (10/30/87)

well, we've finally figured out what the problem is-

symptom was, under ultrix 2.0 and with certain hayes/hayes compatible
modems, dtr was cycling 30 seconds on, 60 seconds off.

problem is, it turns out, that older hayes modems have the dsr(6) and cd(8)
lines tied together. newer models have separate dsr and cd.
in this case, dsr seems to be normally high.

ultrix 2.0 is apparently looking for dsr to be LOW before it sets dtr.
it waits up to 30 seconds, then sleeps for 60 seconds, then tries again.

There is a way to turn this behaviour off- in the config file
(/usr/sys/conf/yournamehere) add the following line near the other
"options" lines, and regen the kernel:

	options NODSR

alternately you can just disconnect dsr (pin 6).
