[comp.unix.ultrix] LINK_TIMEOUT - what is it?

The skeleton .login (/usr/skel/.login) on our system (running Ultrix 1.2)
has a line in it that says:

	setenv	LINK_TIMEOUT	3

What does this refer to? The number of symbolic links the system will
attempt to cross before getting a "Too many levels of symbolic links"
error?

LINK_TIMEOUT is for a program I wrote which I don't think is shipped
in the product any more.

But Armando, the question was (is) what is LINK_TIMEOUT?
Not who wrote it. {:-)
The unix hackers of the world are awaiting the answer to this weighty
question. (pant, pant, pant!) {:-)x2

[ Could it be the longest time that Armando was willing to wait for his
sausages in the morning? Or perhaps the amount of time after which his
microwave turned itself off if he had not remembered to remove his
sausages before burning them? -- Art Z. ]
