[comp.unix.ultrix] Ultrix 2.0-1 patches

parker@waters.UUCP (Ross Parker) (03/12/88)

I've just finished replying to two articles in this newsgroup about
panics in Ultrix 2.0-1. Seeing as few people seem to know about this,
I'll let you in on what *seems* to be a DEC secret... DEC has a tape
of patches that fix a whole bunch of Ultrix bugs and panics. Here's
an excerpt from the README file on the patch tape:

> These fixes are for a number of problems for ULTRIX V2.0-1.
> They fix the following problems:
> major and minor numbers going to 0,0 in the dev directory.
> panic grele's
> panic kmfree bad dealloc
> panic glock
> panic segmentation fault
> panic MUNLOCK
> tmscp device driver problems
> panic PFCLEAR (vmem panics)
> panic gfs_unlock
> named pipe panics
> the biod data corruption problem
> some flow control problems within the device driver and hanging of
> processes in the drivers.
> Number of dmz's
> ccr hangs

If you're having any of these problems, get in touch with your local
DEC support and ask for the patch tape. If they don't know about it,
tell them to get in touch with the Canadian support center (that's
where I got mine).

While you're at it (or even if you *aren't* having any problems), bitch
to your local DEC guy about the fact that they never seem to notify us
when patches like this come along. I've submitted an SPR about it, and
maybe if enough people complain, DEC will *do* something.

BTW, these patches only apply to Ultrix 2.0 (and I think only to 2.0-1).
All the bugs are fixed in 2.2.
