In 1.2, mdtar's default device was /dev/rmt8; in 2.2, it's (SURPRISE!) /dev/rra1a. We had a shell script that used mdtar under 1.2 for archiving selected files/directories to tape -- we didn't use tar back then because the archives would take more than 1 reel and the man file for tar didn't say that tar could deal with EOT (although it turns out that mdtar and tar are both the same file in 1.2). In 2.2, mdtar is a symlink to tar such that it runs as "tar -d", assuming it writes to an rx50 floppy on /dev/rra1a. While it's noted in the man file for mdtar, I wish DEC had indicated this change more prominently in the release notes. I certainly don't remember noticing any mention of this change in the release notes. We mangled our (large) ra1a partition on an ra81 because of this.
