[net.micro] Amiga price and availability

BRAIL@SEISMO.CSS.GOV (07/29/85)

I have read the articles on the Amiga posted here with great
interest, as I am debating whether to buy an Amiga or a Macintosh in
the near future. Has anybody seen the Amiga in any stores? I doubt
it's being shipped yet, but does anybody know when it will be? I
understand the price is $1295, but hopefully there will be dealer
markdowns.
Also, does anyone have information on good analog RGB monitors
for the Amiga? The pictures in Byte showed a monitor that seemed to be
made by Commodore. Does anyone have a price on this? Apparently,
Princeton Graphics wants $999 for their analog RGB monitor. Analog is
the only way to get all 4096 colors. Does anyone have information on
cheaper monitors? I understand the Amiga uses interlacing to get 400
lines on the screen, so a 640X200 resolution would only be necessary.
Finally, what software is available *now*? The Byte article
listed quite a bit, but I have a strong suspicion that it's vaporware.
What's the true story? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

The Amiga is not due out on dealer shelves till Sept 15th. However,
I will be getting a developers system shortly (probably the end of
this week, if not next week). Hold off on your purchase untill you
see the Amiga. There will be around 20 packages available upon
release of the machine (I saw several at the launch), and there are
several high level languages among them (Lattic C, Cambridge LISP,
LOGO and Turbo Pascal in January). I can show you brochures galore
and pictures, but *nothing* can match seeing and hearing the real
thing. Commodore will have an Analog RGB monitor with stereo
speakers available when the machine is released for $495 ! - It is
of very good quality - specifically designed for the machine. I will
be bringing my machine into the microlab for a day a few days after
I get it. I will be posting a message to personals and microlab so
keep an eye out.

Hi,

This is to set the record straight for all those who want to get an
Amiga development system. A development system costs $1500, and with
it comes:

512K Amiga with mouse and integral 880K 3-1/2" floppy
	Lattice C
	Assembler, Linker, Debugger
	AmigaDOS/Intuition
	Microsoft ABasic
Amigascope graphics demo from Electronic Arts
	Tutorial from Mindscape
	Speech routines and library
	Full documentation (OS, hardware etc.)
	All related updates (OS, Documentation)
	Technical support from Commodore

Commodore has machines now, but is very stingy about releasing them
and adding new developrs to their technical support roster. It's not
because they're jealous or anything, their support staff is
presently understaffed and they hope to alleviate this problem
shortly. So don't expect to get one pronto, you may have to wait a
while. The person you should contact for a developer's application
is:

	Caryn Havis
Manager Of 3rd Party Software Operations
	Commodore/Amiga Inc.
	983 University Ave. #D
	Los Gatos, CA 95030

She is truly one of the nicest people I have ever dealt with. Feel
free to mention my name if you care to, she may get a kick out of
it. The developers system is different from the system that will be
on dealers shelves in the following way - the retail system comes
with 256K standard (512K costs and extra $200), No Lattice C and
costs $1295, I don't know what they're upgrade policy will be. I
imagine all OS updates will be free, but documentation may cost a
small amount to upgrade.

Eric
