What are the significant differences between the Signalman Mark XII and the Volksmodem 12? The application is a Hays-equivalent environment where a Tandy 1000 (PC Clone) emulates a terminal. Thanks, Brint

Brint, I haven't used the Volksmodem 12, but I have used the Signalman Mark XII and am somewhat dissatisfied. The university where I study (UCI) purchased two for another graduate student and myself last fall. We used them reliably for about two months and then one of them started spitting ``U''s all over the screen after about 10 minutes of operation. We returned it to Anchor Automation for repair and in about 2 weeks it came back. After subsequent use the problem reappeared. It has since been returned again. The second modem also developed some difficulties; it began to refuse to make a connection. It has been returned as well. All in all, the modems work fine when they work, but the degree of down-time brings the time working to about 60% or so. A disappointed user. --Jeff Schlimmer

I too have had my problems with Anchor modems. We have both a Signalman Mark XII and a Volksmodem. The former has been back to the modem hospital twice in its two year history. Each time I waited nearly a month before c}Getting em back. The Voldksmodem is only a month or so old. The Mark XII seems to be remarkably resistant to noise at 1200 baud, more so even Hayes in my experience. The Volksmodem has its troubles in this regard. On the other hand, the Volksmodem has a couple of handy switches that allow you to set how the modem handles the DTR and CD lines. hh
