Since installing Ultrix v2.2 on Fritz our 8700, some mail has been rejected with notices like "zemon@fritz: unknown user". a) No, I don't know why this is happening but would appreciate any help anyone can provide. Background information appears below if you are interested. b) If you got one of these rejection messages, please resend your note or resubmit your article. -- Art Zemon By Computer: ...!hplabs!felix!zemon By Air: Archer N33565 By Golly: moderator of comp.unix.ultrix **************************************** Background information on the problem: Felix, our gateway machine, is an 11/750 running 4.2 BSD. It receives mail addressed to, for example, "zemon" and passes it by /usr/lib/aliases where it is turned into "zemon@fritz". Felix's sendmail then communicates with Fritz's sendmail via SMTP to transmit the message. The message is send to Fritz with the address "zemon". Fritz is our 8700 running Ultrix v2.2. This problem started happening shortly after we upgraded from v2.0 to v2.2 on April 10. Fritz receives an SMTP relayed message from Felix that is addressed to "zemon". Fritz's sendmail passes the address past /usr/lib/aliases (the exact same file that Felix uses) and the address resolves to "zemon@fritz". Fritz should then invoke /bin/mail to deliver the mail to "zemon". A few times per day, Fritz hands /bin/mail the address "zemon@fritz" and things work OK. Once or twice every couple of days, a message like this appears in /usr/spool/mqueue/syslog and the message is rejected: Apr 21 16:59:09 localhost: 21883 sendmail: AA21693: to=zemon@fritz,\ delay=00:01:58, stat=User unknown The sendmail.cf file is my own concoction brewed up from the examples distributed with 4.3 BSD and Ultrix. BUT it has been running unchanged (other than building a new frozen version after installing Ultrix v2.2) for a year or more. Ideas?
