I am a student assistant at the University of Akron. We are currently running Ultrix 2.0 on our Vax. He have had problems but I wish to address the two most important problems we have right now. 1. DEC has yet to solve our "syslog" problem. It seems that at random times syslog decides to run off into an endless loop and not record anything in /usr/spool/mqueue/syslog. It must be over a year now that we have had this problem. DEC STILL hasn't been able to solve the problem! Infact they even told us that they couldn't work on it because our "core filesystem" had been changed (all that happened was that somehow some of the ownerships got changed from root to daemon). Even after we got everything back to normal they sent us a syslog with the debugging option. This has been running for several months now and we still have the problem. We have the new upgrades but our policy is that we won't change the system until the semester is over (we are hoping 2.2 might solve the problem). But in the meantime DEC sent us another "patch", we are to replace almost ALL of our binaries on our system, once again due to policy we can not "replace" our whole system like this until semester is over. So if ANY one has ANY suggestions or knows how to go about and get this run-away syslog problem solved PLEASE let me know, it appears DEC can't help us. 2. Our other problem (small) is setting up Internet on our system. We have purchased and installed (DEC installed) just recently a Proteon card and gateway. We did install their software driver for their card. The problem we are having is that it seems every morning we have to "restart" the gateway in order for the gateway to recognize the network (now I understand this is probably the gateway that is having the problem), but once the network is recognized there are some sites that we cannot telnet properly to. Ping says there up too. Related to all this is the high number of "error-packets". We are having other problems relating to this too... So if anyone is running Ultrix with a Proteon card and gateway PLEASE let me know!
