Reply-to: ted@blia.UUCP (Ted Marshall) My site runs a number of Unix/Unix-like systems including several Ultrix systems. We also have two VMS VAXes (my area). The Unix systems are networked using TCP over Ethernet. The VMS systems are connected by DECnet over the same Ethernet. Because of the difference in protocols these two groups of machines are fairly isolated from each other. We are now looking for a good way to integrate the two sets of machines and so are considering the Ultrix Gateway software DEC offers. I would appreciate reports from sites running this. Primary things I need to know include: * How invisible the gateway is. In other words, if a Unix user is sending mail to a VMS user, how much difference does the sender see vs. sending to a user on another Unix system. The most important area here is e-mail followed by file transfer. * How reliable this software is. * General idea on cost. We will probably be installing on a uVAX II and will need to buy both the Gateway software and DECnet-Ultrix. However, any price info would be appreciated. Please mail responses to one of the addresses below. I will summarize if I get any responses. Do not use the address in the message header; I don't think it will work. Thanks to everyone. -- Ted Marshall ...!ucbvax!mtxinu!blia!ted <or> mtxinu!blia!ted@Berkeley.EDU Britton Lee, Inc., 14600 Winchester Blvd, Los Gatos, Ca 95030 (408)378-7000 The opinions expressed above are those of the poster and not his employer.
