[comp.unix.ultrix] incremental backups

I'm trying to write an incremental backup script to run on ultrix and sun
fileservers. This is to be run overnight by crontab.

At the moment I'm using dump, which works fine until the end of the tape is
reached, at which point it writes to the console, requiring a yes or no
answer. However any input typed at the console is interpreted as a
username/password.

Is there any way of getting dump to terminate with an error status if it
runs out of tape; or better still is there any way to get it to accept input
(from the console or elsewhere) in response to its question.

Alternatively is there a better way of doing multi-volume incremental
backups overnight?
