Reply-to: yba@sabre.bellcore.com (Mark Levine) We have Ultrix 2.3 and use the Remote Installation Service to implement a network kit on an 8650 so we can update our microvaxes. DEC seems to supply supported and unsupported software, but no instructions for "roll your own". Does anyone use RIS to distribute your own local updates? If so, what do you use to generate the control files for your images (~ris/instctrl/*.{inv,scp,ctrl})? Not sure what setld means by a "configuration message" to be sent to a subset, nor whether there is any way to automagically generate the directions in a .inv after listing the files. I suppose it can be reverse engineered, but am looking for experience out there. Is supplying this format to other DEC users (layered, home-grown, unsupported product) in violation of anything? I know about rdist, rcp, etc., just looking for a method here for the sake of uniformity when setting up a workstation over the network. Alternatively, would you be interested in seeing this for your own use in future Ultrix? Eleazor bar Shimon, once and future Carolingian yba@sabre.bellcore.com
