[comp.unix.ultrix] Problems with a uVax running Ultrix 2.1

Hello, fellow ultrix users!

At the University of Oslo we have a uVax II which acts a gateway
between DECnet and IP, and it's being used to spool print requests
from a DECSYSTEM-2065 onto an Imagen 7320 printer. I wrote part
of the uVax-side software, and subsequently have operator responsibility
on the machine.

Well, that was the background. What we experience now, is that when
we run /bin/passwd to change passwords, the following appear on the
console (ttyv0) and /bin/passwd says "/bin/passwd: I/O error".

Forced Error Modifier set LBN 2305
	ra0a: hard error sn02304

Section B.2.3.4 of the System Manager's Guide tells me that

This error means that the data in the block is corrupted. To
clear the forced error modifier, you should restore the data
affected by the condition. Restoring the data causes the block
to be rewritten; in rewriting the block, the hardware clears the
	forced error modifier.

Now, what? We can copy, restore from tape, write the file through
DECnet (dcp) and TCP/IP (rcp), edit the damn file with vi, every
possible thing can be done with the file, except change passwords with
/bin/passwd! I think I have "restored the data", and thus "caused the
block to be rewritten", some 500 times just to see if the error
recurred. Nope. The only time we have problems is when running
/bin/passwd.

If anyone can help me (us), I'd be very happy. If you need more
information, feel free to write me at enag@verdande.uio.no (the affected
machine) or erik@naggum.uio.no (my own machine).

Seems to me that your disk needs to be backed up and then reformatted and
restored.

The section that has the most info about this in my mailual is section 4.3
Forced Error Recovery. (This is 2.2 though.)
