[comp.unix.ultrix] What is SIXELS? Also, info reqd. on printing thru Decnet.

Hi, all. I am getting a few VAXstation 3000's, and also a color companion jet
printer, LJ250. At the moment, we do not think it vital to purchase a Laser
Printer. From what I find about LJ250, it says that it can print
'ANSI compatible text and color sixel protocol for Digital systems'.
There is also a mention about RETOS, which converts from VAX ReGIS to Sixels.
What I need to know is whether a regular .dvi file (got from TeX or LaTeX) can
somehow be converted to print on the LJ250. Any intermediate stage(s) such as
converting to PostScript (dvi2ps) or LN3 (dvi2ln3) is acceptable, as long as
it can finally be printed. I will be having both VMS and ULTRIX on different
systems, and so any suggestion that works on either of them is welcome.

Now for my second query. I have a printer that I want to access from other
nodes which are connected to it through Decnet. Has there been any code written
for symbionts that permits this? I want the queue on the remote nodes to appear
as transparent as any ordinary queue, permitting features such as show/queue &
delete/entry, etc. I know that I'm asking for too much, but I'll be happy with
anything that I can get. Of course, to make things a little more interesting,
I finally want to be able to make a VMS system to use the printer on an ULTRIX
system, and vice versa.

I will be grateful if replies are directly sent to me (a copy of it, if you are
keen on posting the reply). If anybody else is interested in this, drop a line
and I'll send a concise version of all the information that I get.

Thanks in advance,
             -- rr.
