Our site runs several VAX 750's, 780's and a 785. The disk drives are
Fujitsu Eagles on SI 6100 controllers. We now run 4.3, but
are interested in converting to ULTRIX because we will have several
6200 series machines running ULTRIX.

When ULTRIX 2.0 was distributed, I tried to install it on a 750 with root
on a Fujitsu Eagle drive. I could get the kernel loaded, but the root
partition would not mount, giving the errors
root file system device ioctl failure
root file system device is offline

I have not tried installing ULTRIX since version 2.0. I would like to
hear from any sites that are successfully running 3.0 or 2.2 where the root
disk is a Fujitsu Eagle on a System Industries 6100 controller.
Does ULTRIX now support this hardware as a system disk?
What changes had to be made to use the Eagle?
What driver are you using?

Alternately, if you had to deal with the "root device ioctl failure" problem
with another disk or controller, how did you fix it?

Thanks for your help.
