[comp.unix.ultrix] Name Servers on Ultrix...

Ok, how does one go about getting mail, telnet, ftp, finger, and
all other internet related programs to recognize a name server???
Here at the U of Akron, we have a name server running (the one
from ucbvax). We are in the process of getting a new sendmail with IDA
but problems are arising because of the inconsistencies between Ultrix and
BSD (any help with the new sendmail running on Ultrix with IDA would be
GREATFULLY APPRECIATED!)
Now what about finger, telnet, ftp, and other programs that use
internet in one form or another. How do we get these programs to recognize
the name server???

Well, the short answer is install ULTRIX 3.0. Just came out. You should have
it. It has nameserver support built in to everything.

The long answer... You must have sources. You

1. Compile the nameserver stuff and install it in libc.a in place of the
non-nameserver routines (gethostbyname, gethostby......).

2. Compile anything else that uses those routines (ftp, telnet, etc etc etc)

Like I said... Use ultrix 3.0.

Re: sendmail.... the *only* inconsistency that I can think of is that we still
use the old syslog routines so their are arg count errors which tend to
dump core on you when you run. Just fix the syslog routines in sendmail
to use the older argument format or install the new syslog routines also...

Which ultrix? 1.2, 1.2, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3? All of these do not use the BIND
service. Unless you have source, you would be hard pressed to modify binaries
to use it. If you are using Ultrix 3.0, you are in luck. It *has* BIND
name server, and it has a simple script to set it up, bindsetup(8).

In article <75673@felix.UUCP> you write:

You need to recompile telnet, ftp, and finger with references to the
nameserver libraries. Or, you can wait to get version 3.0 of Ultrix
which has BIND4.7.3 incorporated (I've been running a pre-release of
this and it works pretty well-all the network programs use the
resolver libraries.)

I am also trying to get IDA set up on Ultrix 3.0 and not having a
great time of it so far. I would really appreciate if you would post
any responses you get on how to do this.
