References: Keywords: I just talked to a manager in one of the various Ultrix related organizations at DEC. He told me that he finds comp.unix.ultrix valuable and that even the Ultrix Engineering Group reads it. Some of the information presented here is passed on into DEC's internal notes system and discussed further. And some information, like the fix for the changing major/minor device numbers, which originates here is quickly routed out to customers. Keep up the good work, everybody! And let me add my personal thanks as someone who is benefiting from the information y'all are providing. ============================================================ When replying to an article (as opposed to posting a followup) please check the To: line before sending your letter. Some of the replies have been coming to me. This may be either a bug in the way I am constructing the headers of the messages or in the way your news software is working. I'm checkin my end and will let you know if I find anything interesting. ============================================================ A few of the submissions to comp.unix.ultrix have been mailed to zemon@felix.UUCP instead of to info-ultrix@felix.UUCP. If you have the wrong address somewhere, please fix it. Right now both addresses point to the same place but I will occasionally do things like go on vacation. If you want your articles to be posted regardless of my current presence at work, please send them only to info-ultrix@felix.UUCP. -- Art Zemon By Computer: ...!hplabs!felix!zemon By Air: Archer N33565 By Golly: moderator of comp.unix.ultrix

References: Keywords: I just got a note from someone indicating that one of the articles in comp.unix.ultrix was intended as private mail to me and that I should not have posted it. If I have done that to anyone else, please accept my appology. To avoid future confusion on my part (please, no comments about how easy I am to confuse :-), be careful to send submissions to "info-ultrix@felix.UUCP" and not to "zemon@felix.UUCP". Furthermore, since I seem to get submissions mailed directly to me, if you send me private mail that is related to something in comp.unix.ultrix or if a "Newsgroup: comp.unix.ultrix" header line appears in your mail message, please mark your letter CLEARLY as private and not for posting. Finally, be careful when replying to articles. Replies seem to be coming to me instead of the original authors. Check the "To:" header line and rewrite it if necessary. If you feel strongly about articles appearing in a moderated newsgroup which are cross posted to other newsgroups, please let me know. Barring an overwhelming majority of people who strongly object, I plan to continue to "approve" articles which are cross posted. -- Art Zemon By Computer: ...!hplabs!felix!zemon By Air: Archer N33565 By Golly: moderator of comp.unix.ultrix

I am going on vacation for two weeks (yay!) and have temporarily passed the moderator torch on to my boss, Chuck Vertrees. Be kind to the poor soul. He is a VMS type, although good of heart and undergoing therapy for his affliction. He has promised to pass on Ultrix related material without bias. When placing the blame from inter-system problems, please play down the obvious source of the trouble. It really might be Ultrix's fault, you know. Well, fake it for two weeks, anyway; I want to still have a job when I return. Replies to mail to "zemon" or to "info-ultrix-request" will be delayed until my return. I've only got a 300 baud modem in my poor laptop. Have a good Thanksgiving (to you USA types). See you in December. -- Art Zemon By Computer: ...!hplabs!felix!zemon By Air: Archer N33565 By Golly: moderator of comp.unix.ultrix

Reply-to: zemon@pernod.dec.com (Art Zemon) I have sent email to the Net Watchers asking that comp.unix.ultrix be made unmoderated. Please try to keep the applause to a dull roar. :-) -- Art Z. your faithful, but busy, moderator

Reply-to: zemon%ioctl.dec.com@decwrl.dec.com (Art Zemon) Votes are in and the response was underwhelming (5 votes). There were no strong objections to making comp.unix.ultrix unmoderated so that is what will happen. I have asked the NetPowers to make the change. In the meantime, please hold off on posting things to comp.unix.ultrix. I already have a backlog of 50+ articles and am trying to get ready for yet another trip. (Amazing but true fact: the extensive delays in postings usually correspond to when I am out of town.) I will get the backlog posted before I leave for three weeks. I will also post another message when I find out the effective date of the change to unmoderated status. Finally, an unusually large number of you have sent me subscription requests for the email redistribution on ARPANET and BITNET. That is being handled by somebody at UCB and I will forward all the requests to him. Since I will no longer be a focal point for comp.unix.ultrix articles, and since I have been feeding UCB for the redistribution, I don't know whether that service will continue. I will post more info as I get it. -- Art Z.
