[comp.unix.ultrix] RIS problems under Ultrix3.0

We had a problem with 3.0 ultrix ris failing on boot of the
client system. After having our software librarian get a
hold of DEC - Ultrix support we were told there is an undocumented
piece of software required to make an ris or diskless server
work correctly and that it was done this way because of a
licensing issue. Blecchh! We were given a specific DEC part #
that even our sales reps (who are usually pretty good at protecting
us from corporate silliness) can't find any info on.

The fellow at Ultrix support was getting his info by talking
to someone else and didn't seem all that sure this was exactly the
case. I found a workaround by using the Ultrix2.0 ris kernal
to at least get the root directory setup, then run the stuff from
/.profile and /install.tmp by hand but it was a pain, (I thought
it was a bug in the 3.0ris kernal and I had to get my system up).
If the above is really true it is a
shame it wasn't better documented. Ultrix support says there
should have been a separate sheet of paper in the software
documentation. - I looked very carefully and it was not there.

I am skeptical that the above is the case tho, I certianly
would appreciate hearing either how to actually get the requisite
software or that it really isn't needed and something else needs
	to be done.

					Thanks in advance,

[ You do need additional software if you are trying to use a VAX
to RIS install a DECstation 3100. This is because the VAX
version of Ultrix v3.0 came out before the DECstation was
announced.

You don't completely describe your hardware or the error so this
is just a shot in the dark. The Customer Service Center ought to
be able to promptly resolve the issue for you. -- Art Z. ]
