[comp.unix.ultrix] NFS permission problem

Hi... time for another NFS related problem...

We've recently set up a network of SUN workstations here, and are having
problems with permissions across NFS links. Here's the scenario:

User 'A' is logged onto a SUN workstation, and tries to access a file in an
nfs mounted directory (mounted from a microvax-II running Ultrix 2.2 or 3.0).
The file is owned by user 'B'. All directories in the path to that file
(including the mount point) have mode 755 (setgid has been tried on the mount
point at SUN's suggestion - no difference). The file has mode 777.
Users 'A' and 'B' are in the same group. User 'A' edits the file with 'vi'.
This appears to work OK... vi doesn't complain when the file is brought up
(i.e. no '[read only]'). When the file is written, a 'permission denied'
error appears, and (needless to say) the data does not get written to the
file. Now, the really bizarre part of this is that if group write permission
is given to the *directory* that the file is in, the write works.

Anyone have any ideas???
