I would appreciate some advice about partitioning winchester disks on Ultrix systems. The default partitions seem to bear no fixed relationship to the physical disk parameters such as sectors per track, etc. The specific question has to do with changing the partitions on an rz23 disk on a PMAX. The default partitions use most of the 104Mbyte disk for the root (partition a) and dump and swap (which we put on partition b). I would like to shrink the a partition to a size about 10% more than needed for the root, and shrink the b partition to about 16 Mbyte (roughly the memory size) in order to install a bootable Ultrix on the rz23 (yes, I know its not officially supported). Can I choose numbers of sectors freely, or is there some useful algorithm that could be used to guide this? A second related question: is there a reasonably straight-forward way to shrink the a (root) partition on the system disk? Or will I need to take the disk offline to do this?
