Some time ago we received our Ultrix 3.0 source update on half-inch mag-tape. Ultrix source consists of four tapes. Tape #3 should (according to documentation) contain kernel sources in directory sys. However, tape we received looks like this: rwxr-xr-x 0/0 0 Nov 17 17:05 1988 sys symbolic link to /library/sys rwxr-xr-x 0/0 0 Nov 17 20:31 1988 usr/ rwxr-xr-x 0/0 0 Nov 17 20:27 1988 usr/bin/ rwsr-xr-x 0/0 17408 Apr 13 17:19 1987 usr/bin/at rwxr-xr-x 0/0 174 Sep 15 04:00 1988 usr/bin/basename rwxr-xr-x 0/0 52224 Sep 15 04:00 1988 usr/bin/cpio . . . and so on. Other tapes contain no kernel source, either. I reported this to our local DEC representative and told that probably the master tape is made incorrectly. DEC Software Dsitribution Center in England told to DEC Finland that their tape is perfectly OK and sent another, identical and faulty tape. I hope that someone at DEC (UK,USA) reads this and does something. I must add that our local DEC office has been lately very cooperative and this is not their fault. Problem seems to be somewhere else. Maybe the person who made the tape has never heard of symbolic links :-) We originally got Ultrix source almost automagically. We didn't need to demand the source. Our DEC salesman arranged the source license just because I had mentioned that the source would be be very useful.
