[net.micro] Cry for Help: AT-Xenix TTY's

velu@umcp-cs.UUCP (Velu Sinha) (08/06/85)

This is a question regarding the use of multiple users
under Xenix on PC/AT's.

Using Xenix, I am able to get one "getty" running (on /dev/tty01);
and thus able to use both my console, as well as this tty as
terminals into Xenix. However, I have an application which requires
me to use a second tty into the system. I hoped that I could use
/dev/tty00 (COM1:) as this device. However, I am not able to
do this. Getty runs on this device (init starts it), however, I am unable
to login (no prompt, nothing). As a matter of fact, I cannot even
access /dev/tty00 from a C program as an output device. (Cat'ing to
it does nothing, nothing comes out!) The Baud rate is correct, as is the
cable (identical cables, identical terminals connected to the two
serial ports.)

I do not understand why.

I have a standard IBM AT serial card in one slot, and an AST board in
another.

The AST board switches do not conform to the manual which AST supplied,
however, from DOS the AST board (which is COM2:) as well as the IBM board
(COM1, obviously) board work fine.

I am confused as to why they both work from DOS, and only the AST board
works from Xenix.

I have tried setting the switches as they "should" be (according to the
manual) and the system refuses to boot xenix. I cannot use the system without
the AST board because it holds the extra memory which I need to run Xenix.

SO, if anyone has any experience in this, or any ideas, I'd appreciate some
help. So far this Advantage! board has been nice mem wise, but this serial
port being configured wrongly, and still working is bothering me...

Please reply directly to me.

Thanks in advance.
