[comp.unix.ultrix] Ultrix 3.1 on Xqdsg

gary@mehlville.ncsa.uiuc.edu (Gary Faulkner) (08/04/89)

Has anyone installed Ultrix 3.1 on a vaxstation II with a qdsg (color)
server? I was wondering if the xcons problem had been fixed.

(I'm getting kinda tired of doing a xrefresh with every console message.

Thanks in advance.

	The problem is still there.

Huh? I'm running Ultrix 3.0/UWS 2.0 on a VAXstation 2000 and console
messages go to my login window just like you'd expect. The relevant lines

# "@(#)ttys	4.1	(ULTRIX)	11/23/87"
#
#
#
# name	getty type status comments
#
#console	"/etc/getty e" dw3 on secure	# console terminal
ttyv0 "/usr/bin/xterm -L -fn vtsingle -fb vtbold -sb -geometry =80x24+195+275 -d unix:0" xterm on secure window="/usr/bin/Xqvsm -fd 75 0"
xcons "/usr/bin/xcons 10 ttyv0" none on nomodem

...or is the problem only with qdsg and not qdsm?

Just qdsg. The problem is that if you are running xcons, and a console
message comes in, for some reason it completely screws up your entire display
(to the point of being unusable). The temporary workaround is to NOT run
xcons, let the message come directly to the console, and then xrefresh to clean
up your display.

Try using the DECwindows session manager instead of xterm -L. Both MIT
and DEC have discontinued support of the xterm -L option. MIT now
recommends the xdm session manager. DEC recommends dxsession, a more
powerful session manager than xdm.
