[comp.unix.ultrix] DECterm and Secure Keyboard

jv@mhres.mh.nl (Johan Vromans) (08/13/89)

Hai.

I'm running UWS2.0A on VS3100.

Does anyone know what's the checkbox "Secure Keyboard" in the Commands
menu of dxterm for? The only effect seems to invoke reverse video
mode.

And how to obtain big icons in the Session Managers Icon Box?

Thanks for any help.

1. The secure keyboard is to lock keyboard focus on that one window until
you unsecure it. The inverse video serves as a reminder to you that this
has been done. This is because some window managers (uwm, hpwm, mwm)
allow focus to follow the pointer (mouse) and your typing will end up
in another window if... heck, everyone has done this so you know what
I mean.

2. You can have something like this (using dxwm):

! 0 says big, 1 says small

wm*WmIconForm.iconStyle: 1
wm*emacs*iconStyle:	1
wm*Mail*mainWindow.iconStyle:	0
wm*Mail*read.iconstyle:	1
wm*Mail*send.iconstyle:	1
wm*PSViewer.iconStyle:	1
wm*Paint.iconStyle:	0
wm*Calendar.iconStyle:	0
wm*Notepad.iconStyle:	0
wm*DXterm*iconStyle:	1
wm*iconBox.background: #ffffb332cccc
wm*iconBox*background: #b0a3b0a3b0a3
wm*iconBox*foreground: Blue

Regarding the secure keyboard in DECterm or in Xterm in general. It serves a
more inportant function then merely focusing keyboard input. It is supposed
to establish a secure connection between the window in question and the key-
board. I believe this is done via a XgrabKeyboard call. The importance of
this is once the call is performed it is much more difficult for Joe User
to intercept the chararters you type. This option should (in my opinion)
be used when you are typing in your password (using rlogin/telnet and esp. su)
I think the login window on the console of most machines running X windows or
DEC windows perform this function automatically (ie xdm in X windows).
