[comp.unix.ultrix] Summary of ULTRIX Postscript previewer responses

ins_adjb@jhunix.HCF.JHU.EDU (Daniel Jay Barrett) (08/14/89)

Thank you to everyone who responded to my Postscript previewer
question. I was looking for a Postscript previewer that runs under ULTRIX
and X-Windows. Several people mentioned that one comes standard with
ULTRIX; however, it does not come standard with ULTRIX 2.0 (which we are
running), and I don't know if we are upgrading anytime soon.
Here's a summary of the responses I received, as I promised.
Thanks again.

                                                        Dan

The GNU ghostscript system can preview postscript documents under
X Windows. It can be found on various ftp sites.
I personally haven't use it before as I do not have access to X Window system.
Hope this helps.

DEC ships dxpsview (which seems to work, but I don't do a whole lot of
PostScript, so I donno how good it really is) with DECWindows which is
currently a X11R2 version of X with the R3 fonts & nameing conventions
(and the DECWindows widget set which is sirposto' be what Motif was mostly
baised on). If you go the BSD route then you will need to get GhostScript,
or xps [both PD as far as I know]. Of corse you could do that for
DECWindows if you had reason to beleve they were any better then dxpsview.

I have a copy of a postscript previewer for Suns. The README file follows:

:This is a virtually complete implementation of PostScript.
:Just type make and it should produce a version for suns.
:Since the only complete driver is for suns and since some driver writing
:will be necessary on any other machine, I have not packaged everything
 :up in an idiot-proof box.
:I am not aware of any Gotchas in building this source.
:The X driver used to work on X10 - It will need work for X11.
:The pixrect driver is very new, and should be regarded as didactic, as it
 :scribbles straight onto the display.
:Persuading suntools to look after the bits would have taken too long.
 :
:Writing your own driver involves merely hacking pixrect.c until it will
 :drive your display.
:There are only 11 routines to write, and they're all quite short.
 :
 :Have fun!

Ultrix UWS software provides a PostScript previewer. Works nicely
on my VAXstation 3100.

There was something called postps that I got from MIT that I never was able
to get to work. I probably have most of it still around here someplace...

1) Ghostscript from the Free Software Foundation
2) something from Elan Express
3) something from Image Network

We have a program called 'xps'. It's available on uunet.uu.net, in the
X/contrib.R3 directory. Seems a bit flaky, though - I've known something
to print out successfully that wouldn't make it through xps.
