[comp.unix.ultrix] Booting 750 from TK-50

johnk@loki.Atmos.ColoState.EDU (John Kleist) (08/24/89)

We have a VAX 750 on which we would like to install Ultrix (we currently
run VMS). The distribution tape we have is a TK-50 cartridge. We've
installed a TK-50 drive on the machine, but have been unsuccesful in
booting from the TK-50. We have also tried booting from the TU-58
and then loading 'vmunix' from the TK-50.

Is it possible to boot directly from the TK-50?

If not, what do we need to install Ultrix on this machine?

I dug out my "Basic Installation Guide for the VAX-11/750" (Order Number
AA-MF20A-TE), and it does not mention TK-50 media at all. RA60, yes; 9-track
mag tape, yes; TK-50, no.

In any event, the standalone Ultrix kernel is contained on the multiple
TU-58 cassettes, as is the bootstrap program.

My personal opinion is that you need different media.
