[comp.unix.ultrix] Ethernet support for Ultrix 1.2

DKRUGER@UALTAVM.BITNET (Dwight Kruger) (09/01/89)

I would like to install an Ethernet card in our MicroVAX II. However,
according to our DEC saleman, ethernet is not supported in Ultrix 1.2.
Is there a public domain version of the ethernet drivers, kernel changes,
etc. which I could use with Ultrix 1.2 and a DEQNA-M ethernet card?

Oh, of course it is! Shoot. Please send me the name of the DEC sales
rep.

Thanks.

	He's wrong.

Get a DEQNA, cable kit and add the following line to your
configuration file, rebuild and boot the kernel.

device qe0	at uba0 csr 0174440 vector qeintr

I don't think the DELQA is supported, but that's because
V1.2 was released before the DELQA was announced.

As of Ultrix 1.2:

Ethernet *was* supported.
TCP/IP *was* supported.
NFS wasn't there.
LAT was there, but may not have been "supported".
DECnet *was* supported, with DECnet/Ultrix.

I'm not 100% sure about DEQNA support, since the original 1.2 SPD doesn't
mention any MicroVAX support, but it was most likely supported. See if
you have a /sys/BINARY.vax/if_qe.o. If so, you've got it.

Please give serious consideration to a 1.2 -> 3.x upgrade. *NONE* of 1.2
is "supported" and you'll have difficulty resolving any problems you
run across.

The DELQA was supported by V1.2 even though it wasn't in the SPD.

LAT was only supported for the DECServer 100 - the 200's were
not supported... downline loads could be offloaded from VMS as
our VMS engine was a VAX730 back then! (ethernet device: DEQNA)

I would also like say that Ultrix V1.2 was/is a very stable product.
It is still running on the machine of my previous employer with
no problems. The only outages occur when there are hardware
problems (RA81's or 780HW).

cheers,	-jj
