[net.micro] Copying software

jp@lanl.ARPA (07/27/85)

I think that Borland has a pretty good approach for reducing software
piracy.

1. Their software is moderately priced.

2. They have a pretty good manual that is not easy to Xerox.

If other software producers would take heed, software piracy
would be a non-problem.

Another example is Flight Simulator Micro-Soft version. Fantastic
programe, wonderful documation, low cost($32.00). You really
do need the manual, but you WANT the manual to know where and
how to fly.........
That's what I feel about much of the ava. software.
Side Kick has an interesting ides too. Two prices one for copy
protected and another for non-protected.

...and an incredible amount of piracy!! I think Microsoft Flight
Simulator is the most pirated program I have ever seen with the possible
exception of Word Star. Does a low price really inhibit piracy? (The
Flight Simulator is also copy-protected, which shows that even the
combination of low price and a weak copy-protection scheme doesn't slow
people up.)

My comment before was to point out that some Mfgrs. are attempting to
make software affordable to more people. Sure most anyone can copy most
any software, but Micro-Soft has made a way to have your software at an
afforable price. People will always copy programes, but unless it is for
yourself only, it is illegal and takes profits from that company or writter.
Why not pay a modist $32.00, for example, and get a very well written manual,
warrentee (sp) in some cases updates to the orignal programes? For example,
the amount of pleasure and enjoyment that you get from that investment the
cost is quite low, compared to a snow ski weekend which lastes only 2 days.
If people must insist on making copys of software and not paying for them
some of the protections may become so good that to make a personal copy
will take more trouble than it is worth. Yet if the price is afforable and
the quality of the programe is good, including support to the customer, we
won't see AS MUCH rip-off of the software companies. Granted after the
programe is released and debugged the major cost seems to only be for a
disk and manual, there must be profit somewhere. Enough of my saop box.
This is meerly MY feelings and I am not trying to preach, just speak-out......
