[comp.unix.ultrix] syslog date corruption Ultrix 3.1 vs. SunOS 4.0.3c

grr@cbmvax.UUCP (George Robbins) (09/24/89)

We recently developed a problem with the dates in the syslog file
becoming corrupted.

It turns out that this was due to a Sun 4 which was running a very
recent release of SunOS and which had 'mailhost' and 'loghost' specified
on the /etc/hosts line for the Ultrix system.

Apparently the new SunOS syslog formats are incompatible with the
Ultrix syslog daemon, corrupting the daemon in un-enumerated, but
obviously unpleasant ways.

The SunOS kernel/release responsible:

"SunOS Release 4.0.3c (GENERIC) #1: Thu May 25 17:17:12 PDT 1989"

The obvious workaround is to redirect the mailhost and loghost entries
to a compatible machine...

I'm not filing an SPR, since the Suns really should have been logging
to their fileserver, not to the Ultrix system. People desiring closer
integration may want to keep an eye peeled.
