We have recently installed a DECStation 3100 with UWS 2.0/2.1 and Ultrix 3.0/3.1 running on it. We were able to take the sendmail.cf file from our VAX 11/780 (running Ultrix 2.0) and use it on the DECStation 3100, with only changes to the name of the host itself. We tried to run Ultrix 3.0 on the VAX 11/780 using the identical sendmail.cf file that works under Ultrix 2.0, and it hangs in local mail, as well as in trying sendmail -bt. In both cases, the command does nothing visible, and has to be aborted with a ^C. If we use the generic 3.0 sendmail.cf, we can get local mail to work fine. The problem is that we have such a complicated collection of networks and special cases in the sendmail.cf, that we would like to carry it over to the new system. Has anyone come across this problem, or does anyone have any suggestions? All help is appreciated; thanks in advance. -- Morris Strongson INTERNET: mms@bnlux0.bnl.gov BITNET: mms@bnlux0.BITNET UUCP: ...philabs!sbcs!bnlux0!mms or bnlux0!mms@uunet.uu.net

I had the same problem with sendmail.cf. The file that I had working just fine under Ultrix 2.x broke miserably under Ultrix 3.0. I ended up calling DEC 'support' (if it can properly be called that...) and was told 'we don't support non-standard sendmail config files'. Well, come on, guys. I'm not asking you to debug my config files, all I ask is that you don't piss around with things that worked just fine, forcing me to put in hours of work reinventing the wheel. How many sites out there are actually running the DEC standard config file??? How many actually got broken by this change? Peeved,

Fortunately (?), we were running the standard sendmail.cf until just recently on all our machines. When I finally got approval to connect us to the network, I had to start changing things around. We have a mixture of 2.3 and 3.0 systems here. Our gateway is running 3.0. I modified the 3.0 .cf file to meet our needs, and then I modified it just a little more for our non-gateway systems. Currently, I'm running the same sendmail.cf on all machines, with just a couple of differences on the gateway machine. Either 2.3 will run 3.0 configurations (backwards compatible only?), or I'm fortunate enough to not be utilizing any of the changed functionality portions. Any info available on just what exactly changed between 2.3 and 3.0? -- Mike Bryan, Applied Computing Devices, 100 N Campus Dr, Terre Haute IN 47802 Phone: 812/232-6051 FAX: 812/231-5280 Home: 812/232-0815 UUCP: uunet!acd4!mjb ARPA: mjb%acd4@uunet.uu.net "Did you make mankind after we made you?" --- XTC, "Dear God"

Why don't you just get the sources for sendmail5.61 and compile and use it? Ultrix 3.0 is close enough to BSD4.2 with 4.3 networking that you can pretty much type 'make' and be done. That was my solution. Well, I am certain that when I moved to 3.0 of ULTRIX we used the very same sendmail.cf file that we had been using for ages. The only change I had to make was to modify the mailer definition for the Dmail (DECNET Mailer). If you'd like, I'd be happy to take a gander at the file, but won't be able to get to it for a week or so. Fred
